If Covid-19 has taught us anything, it’s the importance of cleanliness. And spring is the perfect time to thoroughly cleanse your home to keep it sanitary and safe. So, load up on soaps and disinfectants, and roll up your sleeves!

Home Protection

High-touch areas

Cleaning is like home insurance, you never want to deal with it, but it can't take care of it's self.

Giving doorknobs, light switches, tables and countertops a thorough cleaning is a two-stage process. First, clean with soap and water to remove grime and germs.

Then, use a household disinfectant to kill germs left behind. Or, you can use diluted bleach, if it’s safe for the surface. Mix one tablespoon of bleach with a quart of water, apply it with a cloth and let it stand for three to five minutes before rinsing. Solutions with at least 70 percent alcohol can also be used.

Soft surfaces

For carpets, rugs and curtains, clean with soap and water or a cleaner/disinfectant, or put them in the washing machine on the warmest setting. Then, vacuum carpets and rugs.

Work and play items

Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions on the best way to clean keyboards, telephones and remote controls. If there’s no information available, use wipes or sprays with at least 70 percent alcohol. Then, dry the surface thoroughly.

Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems

Ensure your HVAC filter is installed correctly. You might also upgrade to the highest-rated filter your system can use. As the systems only filter the air when the fan is running, run the system fan longer.

Consider using an air purifier, which can reduce airborne contaminants. And it’s spring, so open the windows and let in the fresh air!
